My Services

Every scholar has a unique knowledge background and writing style, and every text is aimed at a particular audience. I always cater my work to meet my clients’ individual needs.

At the start of our collaboration we’ll discuss your project and what level of intervention you want from me (the list of services here is a guide, and can be modified as needed). You’ll then send me a short sample of your text, let me know your particular needs and concerns over email or a phone call, and I’ll quote a price for the entire job.

Typically I do not take on projects for copy editing only - the services I offer are more specialized. If you are seeking a copy editor I would be happy to connect you to some of my trusted colleagues.

Because every project is different, I charge not by the word but based on an estimate of the time required. Discounted rates may be available for scholars without access to institutional funding.

  • With line editing I adjust phrasing and diction to make your ideas come through as sharply as possible, and may also make minor suggestions on structure.

This type of intervention is a must for most non-native speakers writing in English. Here both my experience with such clients and my own foreign language skills are key - I can recognize what authors are trying to communicate, and retool the text to transmit that information clearly and persuasively.

  • For clients looking for more support in creating well-structured texts with strong arguments, comprehensive editing combines what publishers often term ‘evaluative’ and ‘content’ editing. I offer suggestions on organization and framing, as well as constructive criticism in terms of content. For topics in my areas of specialty I can also do some light research and reference-gathering. The type of intervention is fully customizable to the client’s needs as discussed in an initial meeting.

Comprehensive editing typically proceeds in two rounds, first dealing with the larger picture, and then polishing the final text.

  • This service provides field-specific feedback for historical scholars working in my own areas of expertise: art and architecture, religion and culture, and women from around 1200 to 1800. The closer your project is to my own work, the better I can help with suggesting references and sharpening your arguments.

The Peer Review service is highly flexible and responsive to the client’s needs, and can be combined with any level of editing.

Disclaimer: as I hope is obvious, this is not the same thing as a formal, blind peer review through a publisher, and purchasing this service does not mean that you can call your text “peer reviewed.”

  • I offer translation services from Dutch and German into English. In order to ensure accuracy I only take on texts in the humanities and social sciences, and I prefer to work on projects close to my own areas of expertise. If you’re not sure whether my skills would fit your needs, please do get in touch and we’ll see if it’s a match.
